Max Toy Custom Painted Pharaohs ファラオス!

Being a member of the Max Toy Club certainly has its advantages! One recent member exclusive was first chance to obtain a Rumble Monsters Pharaohs hand-painted by Mark Nagata. Members were also offered the opportunity to buy a really nice print of Mark's original painting of Pharaohs on the rampage in San Francisco.

The figure is beautifully painted in metallic paints and the paint work is of the highest quality and craftsmanship. Mark really did an awesome job on these. (He has said it is unlikely that he will have the time to again do a job of this size or this time consuming anytime soon.)

Limited to 70 pieces, each figure comes with a numbered header card, also designed by Mark just for this release. The Pharaohs stands about 7 inches tall by about 6 inches from tail to hands.

The giclee print and the header are also beautifully rendered by Mark.

Here are some behind the scenes peaks at Mark working on the toy, some shots of the print in progress, a view of the header card, and a glimpse of a rare one-off done for some lucky toy fan, all with words and pictures by Mark himself! So enjoy!

"Laying down the first gold metallic spray. I use a Iwata HP-C airbrush with a silent compressor. Sometimes I also use a Iwata HP-B .... these are awesome airbrushes...."

"All figures with gold sprays."

"Hand applying the green and black parts of the eye... Oh the steady hands! Hint, I used a thin sharpie to draw the outside of the pupil first than went back in with the black v color paint. Using a 000 point paint brush for details."

"Final figures... 70+, after about 5 days of work. About 9 hours per day...."

Mark had previously given some details on the painting process for the Pharaohs on Max's Brain:

"Each figure, being hand painted, went like this.. First a spray of gold was laid down front, top, bottom and sides. Then silver was sprayed in several areas as a ground for the blue spray. Transparent blue was sprayed over the silver, as well as over the gold making a metallic green (blue plus yellow equals green). Then all the eyes were brush painted....green and black."

Here's the header. The numbering was hand-written into the little white "cloud" at the upper left.

"Sketch for giclee print."

"Final painting... Acrylics on hot press board. Using both airbrush and hand paints, with glazes of matte medium with paint. I pencil directly on the board with no gesso underneath. I do not seal the board and just start laying in washes of acrylic over my pencils. I usually do an under painting of Burnt Sienna and Paynes Grey... then using matte medium glaze in colors with a paint brush, with some airbrushed passges for smooth effects if needed.

"If I'm tight for time I will use color pencils to move the process along faster. Once done I varnish all my work with Golden Gloss Varnish.

"From start to finish about 5 days total... 2 days to pencil, 1 day to lay in under painting, 2 days for colors."

"Special one off for a rumble monsters fan... I don't usually do customs... so this was a very rare case."

Mark: Super job!!! Thanks for making such awesome toys and art available to us. I can't wait to see what's next!

Mutant Chaos Custom by H. Lee Porter. Beautiful!!!

[click to make big]

Custom painted Real Head Mutant Chaos, by H. Lee Porter of Seattle (see link to Lee's website in Favorites).

I have posted a picture of this awesome mutant before as part of a group shot. Here is a different view, originally submitted for a feature article about Lee's custom work that was to have appeared in Playtimes magazine. Unfortunately, the magazine was discontinued by its publisher just before the article went to press.

Later, I will post some pics of several other of Lee's other customs that also would have appeared in the article.

Plaseebo 2nd Edition by Bob Conge!

The 2nd edition of Plaseebo Custom's rotocast vinyl figure "Plaseebo" is now available. Plaseebo was designed and sculpted by Bob Conge. The figure is cast in blue glow in the dark vinyl with blue inset eyes and is 8” long laying down (5” seated ). It comes in a 10” long vinyl Sarcophagus, plus a copy of the illustrated “Legend of Plaseebo“ story printed on a 14” X 21” sheet of parchment paper and a full color header card illustrated by Bob Conge. The edition is limited to only 80 pieces worldwide.

Bob refers to Plaseebo as "American Kaiju." This is a synopsis of the Legend of Plaseebo (the back story):

“AWAKEN” ( The Legend of Plaseebo )

"The Legend of Plaseebo begins with the birth of Tsu during the great storm of 2039 BC on the island of Kyushu in the archipelago known today as Japan. It tells the story of how Tsu, an unwanted Japanese dwarf at the age of ten, sails five thousand miles and flies another three thousand to arrive in the Egyptian city of Coptos where he is believed to be their reincarnated Pharaoh, Plaseebo. After his fifty seven year reign, Plaseebo lies entombed in a great pyramid for three thousand years while his spirit longs for the soil of his birthplace, Japan. Finally, in 1803 AD two archeologists break into his burial chamber and awaken the Mummy Plaseebo, who to this day roams the earth in search of his homeland."

To read the complete Legend of Plaseebo, see pics of the 1st edition Plaseebo (and a lot of other great art), and/or to order Plaseebo, visit the Plaseebo Custom website here.

Eyezon from Mark Nagata and Max Toy Co!!!

Here are some pics of what looks to be a really fantastic new figure named "Eyezon" from Mark Nagata and Max Toy Co.

Awesome, Mark!!!

From Vinyl Pulse: "Mark Nagata of Max Toy Co has been a busy man lately. Here's a sneak peek at the sculpt of Kaiju Eyezon, a villain of Captain Maxx. The production soft vinyl version of this evil creature will stand 10.5 inches tall with a 10.5 inch arm span. One mighty challenge for Captain Maxx, wouldn't you say? The sculpt will be available for viewing at Max Toy Co's SDCC booth (no. 4837) and there's a chance some will be available for purchase. Sharing the booth will be our friends from Japan, the folks from Gargamel. Dope."

Eyezon showed up earlier in the mini print that came with the Halloween Black Capt Maxx. I wondered who the Captain was battling. Now we know! Here is a pic from the Max Toy site:

Will post more info here as soon as it is available.

M1 Club Daikaiju Gorgo M1号 ゴルゴ

[Click on the pics to hear them roar.]

Gorgo and Gorgo "cub." These figures have one of the nicest paint jobs I have ever seen.

M1号 CLUB DAIKAIJU ゴルゴ。大きさは 約9センチ。

From Wikipedia:

"Gorgo is a 1961 British science fiction variation on Godzilla (with hints of King Kong). Directed by Eugène Lourié, it tells the story of an underwater monster's capture off the coast of Ireland. The monster is taken to London to be featured as a circus attraction.

"As the film commences, Captain Joe Ryan is salvaging for treasure off the coast of Ireland, when a volcano erupts, nearly sinking his ship. Ryan and his first officer, Sam Slade, take the ship to Nara Island for repairs. As they enter harbour, they discover the floating carcasses of marine animals, the first hint that something dangerous was awoken by the volcano eruption.

"Ryan and Slade consult the harbour master, who also has archeological pretensions: he has been salvaging a Viking longship in the harbour. Some of his men have disappeared mysteriously; it turns out that one has died of fear. After dark, a monstrous creature surfaces, attacks a group of fishermen, then comes ashore to wreak havoc on the island. This reptilian creature, which somewhat resembles Godzilla or a giant carnosaur from the Mesozoic era, is supposedly 65 feet tall. The people of the island finally drive it off.

"Ryan and his crew manage to capture the monster and haul it aboard their ship, tying it to the deck. Soon, university scientists arrive on Nara, hoping to collect the monster for study, but Ryan has been offered a better deal by the owner of a circus in London. When the ship arrives in London, the circus owner names it "Gorgo", after the Gorgons of Classical mythology (though it actually bears no resemblance to them). It is exhibited to the public in Battersea Park (in a scene reminiscent of Carl Denham's exhibition of the giant ape Kong).

"The scientists examine Gorgo, and conclude that he is not yet an adult, and that his mother must be nearly 200 feet tall. On that note of foreboding, we cut to Nara Island as Gorgo's mother attacks. She trashes the island, sinks a naval destroyer, and resists attack from other warships. Later, she comes ashore in London, still looking for her offspring, and destroys the Tower Bridge and Big Ben, despite being bombarded by tanks and infantry. Royal Air Force jets attack her, but with no effect. Having demolished much of London, she rescues Gorgo, and both monsters return to the sea."
