Yapuru from Ultraman Ace by Yamanaya

This is the "Enormous Yapuru" (Giant Yapool), the ”strange dimensional superhuman” made by Yamanaya from Yamanaya’s “Monstrous Beast Home Village” series

The figure is made of clear vinyl. It appears that it is clear green vinyl from about the chest down, and plain clear vinyl from the chest up. It is hard to tell because of the paint, but if you hold the figure in front of a bright light, you can see through the entire body, even the head. The paints are beautiful metallics (bronze, brown, blue, gold, etc.). It is referred to as the SP (special) color edition (SPカラー 版). It is standard sized, about 9 inches tall, and is articulated at the arms, legs, and waist.

Yapuru originally appeared in Episode 23 of Ultraman Ace (I believe). In the show, Yapuru attained a height of 165 feet tall and weighed 82,000 tons.

[Click the pics to enlarge.]

Red vinyl with beautiful metallic blues, greens, and gold. (This figure was also previously issued in a brown vinyl version with slightly different paint.) This red vinyl version was released at the Kodomo no Zidaikan museum in Niigata, Japan, in a limited edition of 100.

Also referred to as “Hitsuporito star person” and “Hell Star Human.”

(I obtained this figure, like many of my other favorites in my collection, from Mike Johnson through the Club Tokyo marketplace. Mike is super knowledgeable about kaiju of all types, probably one of the top experts in the U.S., and Club Tokyo is a fantastic kaiju community and resource. Check it out!)

The large (standard size) figure comes with a mini Ultraman Ace. There is a magnet in Hipporito’s left hand and one in the mini Ultraman Ace’s body so that the Hipporito can “hold” the Ultraman.

Hipporito Seijin was a bad guy (one of the very baddest) in the Ultraman Ace A TV show that aired on Japanese TV beginning in 1972. Hipporito Seijin was in two episodes, Episode 26 : ZENMETSU! URUTORA GOKYOHDAI (Total Annihilation! The Five Ultra Brothers); and Episode 27 : KISEKI! URUTORA NO CHICHI ( Miracle! The Father of Ultra).

Hipporito Seijin was so powerful that in Episode 26 he was able to defeat each of the Five Ultra Brothers (Ultraman, Ultraman Ace, Ultraman Zoffy, Ultraman Jack and UltraSeven) by turning them all into statues. It wasn't until Episode 27 when UltraFather arrives and battles Hipporito for a while before getting defeated, but is able to throw his Color Timer up to revive Ultraman Ace. Ultraman Ace finishes the job and all the Ultra Brothers become Ultraman again and bring Ultrafather back to M78.

Here are some screen-shots (copyright the owners of the show) from Episode 26 showing Hipporito capturing one of the Ultra Brothers, turning him into a statue, and covering him with “tar.”

And here are some screen-shots (copyright the owners of the show)from Episode 27 when Dad shows up to help save the day!

This is a Bullmark reproduction figure. Dark blue vinyl with lighter metallic blue spray and red and silver highlights. Standard size.

[Click the pics.]

Kanegon カネゴン first appeared in the Japanese TV series Ultra Q ウルトラQ, and is perhaps one of the most famous and iconic monsters from the Ultra Q show. The Ultra Q episode was entitled “Kanegon’s Cocoon” and aired in April 1966 (Episode 15).

The Kanegon story is somewhat surreal and whimsical. Very briefly: a greedy, money-loving boy wakes up transformed into the money-eating, human-sized, creature, Kanegon... a strange combination of shellfish and coin purse, complete with a zipper mouth and a coin counter on its chest. Kanegon has to keep eating coins to keep the counter from getting down to 0, or he will die. After going through a number of trials and tribulations, the boy/Kanegon apparently learns his lesson and he is transformed back into a boy. However, upon returning home, he discovers his parents are now Kanegons!

[Source of text; Adapted from Wikipedia (Japanese and English)]

"Mechagodzilla (メカゴジラ Mekagojira Mecagodzilla) is a fictional character from various films in the Godzilla series, introduced in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974). It is Godzilla's mechanical doppelganger and one of the most popular Toho kaiju.

"The first Mechagodzilla was created as a weapon of destruction by a race of ape-like aliens, sometimes known as Simeons or the Black Hole aliens

It first appeared in a pseudo-flesh outer covering, masquerading as the real Godzilla during attacks against Japan in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. Curiously, while the Simeons gave Mechagodzilla a flamethrower in his mouth to mimic Godzilla's atomic beam, they didn't bother replicating Godzilla's unique roar. Godzilla's dinosaur friend Anguirus wasn't fooled by the impostor. Mechagodzilla ripped of his tongue, and sent him fleeing underground. The battle went badly for Anguirus, but tipped humanity off to the charade.

Soon the true Godzilla appeared and exposed his rival's metallic form completely. Interestingly, after losing its disguise, Mechagodzilla's fingers lost all mobility. (No explanation for this was ever given.) The battle resulted in a tie, however, and in the end it took the combined might of Godzilla and King Caesar to remove Mechagodzilla's head from its shoulders, ending the threat.

The Simeons rebuilt their dreadnought for another try in Terror of Mechagodzilla one year later. Having learned the value of teamwork firsthand, the Simeons called in an old debt to pair Mechagodzilla with the aquatic dinosaur Titanosaurus. (Any reasoning as to why they did not bother to recruit Titanosaurus in the first film is never mentioned, though they may have simply thought that Mechagodzilla was more than a match for Godzilla in the first place, making the extra help unnecessary.)

This time, there were some modifications to it, including moving Mechagodzilla's brain down into its neck so it could function unimpaired with its head completely removed. Godzilla's perseverance combined with the timely self-sacrifice of Mechagodzilla's operator brought the machine down for good. The King of the Monsters buried Mechagodzilla's shattered form deep underground to prevent another repair job, and since this was the final film of the original Godzilla series, he was successful."

Kaijujitsu - Bemon's greetings

Nakayoshi Redjack from Ultraman Ace なかよし レッドジャック ウルトラマンA

Ralph Cosentino, author, illustrator, and toy designer extraordinaire sent me some pictures and information regarding a beautiful new toy he recently acquired that I want to share with you here:

This is a Nakayoshi Redjack. It is Ralph’s understanding that only 10 of this “Hawaiian" version were made.

Photos © 2006 Ralph Cosentino. All rights reserved.

Red Jack レッドジャック appeared in Ultraman Ace Episode 30 (1972) entitled: The Ultra Star That Even You Can See (きみにも見えるウルトラの星 黒雲超獣レッドジャック) (KIMI NI MO MIERU URUTORA NO HOSHI).

Here is a shot of Redjack from the Ultraman Ace show:

From Wikipedia:

Ultraman Ace (ウルトラマンA or ウルトラマンエース - Urutoraman Êsu) is the title superhero of a tokusatsu SF/kaiju/superhero TV show, and is the 5th show in the Ultra Series. Produced by Tsuburaya Productions, the series aired on Tokyo Broadcasting System from April 7, 1972 to March 30, 1973, with a total of 52 episodes.

Starting with this show, the Ultra Series heads in a notably different direction, slowly shifting from a sci-fi/mystery adventure to full-tilt superhero fantasy fare. Also, all previous Ultra-beings (namely Ultraman, Zoffy, Ultra Seven, and New Ultraman) make more frequent appearances here, whereas they only made guest appearances in the previous show Return of Ultraman.

This series marks the debut of special effects director Koichi Kawakita, who went on to do many other tokusatsu superhero shows (for both Tsuburaya Productions and Toho Company Ltd.), and directed the FX for the majority of the "VS Series" (AKA: "Heisei Series") in Toho's Godzilla films. Kawakita, needless to say, was a student under the late Eiji Tsuburaya.

Thanks, Ralph!!!
